Karyn Hepburn

Background:

I graduated from Queen's in 2010 with a Medial in Math and Physics, and then did my Education year in I/S Math and Physics, graduating in 2011, with a focus on exceptional learners.

What they did with their degree:

I have been teaching for 10 years now, seconded from the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board to work at McHugh Education Centre, working with students in Education and Community Partnership Programs. My first position was teaching at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and I have since worked with students in several other mental health day treatment programs in Ottawa, working one-on-one or in small groups with students. I actually first learned about McHugh when I went there for my alternative practicum during teacher's college. I fell in love with the school and the students and I have never left! I'm also active in my OAME chapter (Ontario Association of Mathematics Educators), planning workshops and conferences for math teachers.

Piece of Advice:

My advice to Con-Ed students would be to try and find a balance between your school work and enjoying university life. It goes by fast, so make sure you take a break and enjoy things! Also, take advantage of arranging your own practicum in undergrad to try teaching grades/subjects that really interest you -- you may not get as much choice in your B.Ed year. And nerd out and talk to your fellow Con-Eddies about teaching stuff -- you'll make friends who you'll be able to talk to about that stuff forever. Really -- I just got a text this morning from a Con-Ed friend about the new Grade 9 Math curriculum!
