Doris Jeanne MacKinnon

Background:

School of Graduate Studies: Professional Master of Education (c/o 2020)

Area of Focus: Adult Indigenous Education

Earlier Degrees: Bachelor of Arts in English, Master of Arts in Canadian and Indigenous History, and Ph.D. in Canadian and Indigenous History.

What they did with their degree:

While my earlier degrees in Canadian and Indigenous History provided a solid foundation in those areas of study, I did not yet feel ready to instruct. I was drawn to the graduate degree program at Queen’s for its flexibility, the uniqueness of the content, and for the reputation of the university. This Master of Education opened so many doors for me. I instructed and worked in program design as I was completing the degree and have now moved into a position as Dean of Academics at a private college with a mission to “connect Albertans to education and employment.” In addition, I continue to research and write about the historical experiences and contributions of Metis women, much of which is highlighted on my blog at dorisjeannemackinnon.ca

Piece of Advice:

As students, as instructors, as administrators - we are all leaders “where we are” at this moment in time. We are called to be change agents in ensuring that we contribute to our collective journey of reconciliation, inclusion and engagement. If education should instill in us one basic thing it is that our journey of learning and contributing to the greater good is lifelong.
