Teachables are teaching subjects that students must decide on if they plan to teach at the intermediate/senior level. Students must pick two of the teachables offered at Queen’s. These teachables often transfer over to be a students major/minor but there are ways to have a different major or minor than your teaching subjects.

If you are planning to teach at a primary/junior level no teachables are required. Students can pursue any major/minor without it being a teachable.

The following list shows the Intermediate-Senior teaching subjects offered at Queen’s Faculty of Education. Required courses must be taken to meet the final year Education requirements of a teaching subject. Some of the teaching subjects will need specific courses that must be taken throughout your undergraduate degree; example Canadian History is needed for a History teachable.

If you are planning on teaching students from grades 1-6 then you will follow the Primary/ Junior plan. This just means that you will be doing your Practicums in a P/J classroom and will not need to have any of the teachables offered through Queen’s.

During your 5th year at Queen’s completing your Bachelor or Education you will be taking courses on almost all of the teaching subjects that you will be required to teach at this level. These courses include: Language, Mathematics, Social studies, Science and Technology and a choice of Art, Music or Drama.

If you are planning on teaching students from grades 7-12 then you will follow the Intermediate/ Senior plan. This just means you will be doing your first Practicum in a Primary/ Junior classroom (as it is mandatory in first year) but during 2nd and 3rd year you will be in an Intermediate/ Senior class. You will also need to select two teachables from the subjects chosen by Queen’s. You can find this list under the “Teachables” tab in this section of the website.

Teachables will also have specific classes you need to take throughout your undergraduate degree. For example, to complete the History teachable you need to take a Canadian History course. During your 5th year at Queen’s completing your Bachelor of Education you will be taking courses on your two teachables along with other education classes.
