Rachel Shindman

Nicknames: Rach, Rachie, Rachie-Poo (that’s a lie), oh hey

Hometown: Toronto

Favourite First Year Course: MATH 112 (except I took it in 2nd year…shh)

Favourite Thing about the Teaches: Their beauty (seriously, they are some intensely good looking people). Their booty (& its shake). (See what I did there? Read it out loud.) And really just the fact that they are fantastically amazingly awesome people.

Favourite Thing about Con-Ed: Me. Okay, that’s a lie too. Hmmm, Con-Ed. It’s hard to pick one favourite thing. I love that it’s small, but not too small. I love that every joke is a B.Ed joke. I love that we get a B.Ed. And I love that it’s awesome.

Personal Spotlight: I am addicted to coffee. That’s pretty much all you need to know. Okay, seriously (although, seriously, coffee makes my life complete. just saying). I’m a Geography major and a History minor, although I decided this year to like Math. Why? That’s a very good question. Couldn’t tell you. But that’s the beauty of university – you can like completely unrelated things, and it works. I’m a big city girl, but I absolutely love Kingston. My main talent is procrastination, which, believe it or not, is not ideal in university. And facebook. I’m good at facebook. Also not ideal. Oh, and I’m insanely excited for Frosh Week.

Words of Wisdom for Frosh of 2014: Don’t be scared. Be nervous, be apprehensive, but also be excited. You’re about to start an INCREDIBLE chapter of your life. By choosing Con-Ed, you’ve picked one of the most friendly, supportive faculties around. You may not understand what that means now, but you will. Get involved! Find something you like, and do it. You’ll meet great people, you’ll have fun, and you’ll have something to distract you from that 10-page essay or pesky lab report. And play innertube waterpolo. Go to class. Seems obvious, right? It’s actually quite useful. Most of the time. And use the libraries. If they don’t get used, they get lonely.Have fun! University is a unique experience, so take advantage of that. Do your work on time. Use facebook sparingly. Bring rainboots. Explore campus, but also get off campus and explore downtown. And the most important – this is a new and exciting experience. But that doesn’t mean that you’ll completely adjust in the first week. Just remember that whatever you’re feeling, and whenever you’re feeling it, there are a TON of other people feeling the same way. So talk to people. Add people on facebook. Find things you enjoy, and do them. Do work, but also do things that aren’t work. Have a good time. Make this place your home

Laura Luangmany

Hometown: Aurora!

Favourite First Year Course: DEVS 100!

Favourite Thing About the Teaches: The laws of physics do not apply to them. The brilliance of their smiles could generate enough power to sustain a small village for approximately a year, and they are collectively faster than a speeding bullet. Actually, I lied. They are individually faster than a speeding bullet. They are funny, smart, talented, bright, and incredibly good-looking. Seriously though, I’m not kidding! Get ready to meet 39 amazing people!

Favourite Thing About Con-Ed: The people in it, hands down! Everyone is so genuinely wonderful, and they are what make this faculty the best place to be. There’s a place for everyone as you are. In the words of Scott Jay (who you will meet because he is a legend): “You thought your high school friends were cool, just wait until you meet the people in Con-Ed!”

Personal Spotlight: I have a tendency to get myself into very random, very odd situations: during the Spice Girls Reunion Tour, I accidentally hitchhiked to their Long Island concert with my sister; when I was in Laos, a monkey at the zoo attacked my brother; I almost broke the rear view mirror of my grade-12 music teachers VW Golf when we decided it would be a good idea to see how many people we could fit in it with the doors closed (23 if you’re curious)! I really like good conversation, good food, good music, and the game ‘Darling, I love you’. When I grow up I want to be a teacher… or a superhero. Good thing those are basically the same thing!

Words of Wisdom for Class of 2014: First year is amazing so soak it up because it goes by fast. Learn to wake up when your alarm clock goes off the first time, and keep up with your PSYC 100 readings. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, because everyone wants to see you succeed. Also, when I was in first year, I got a huge, almost-the-size-of-your-face, second-pushing-third-degree, that’s-gonna-leave-a-wicked-scar burn on my leg from making tea. Be careful when pouring hot liquids.

Favourite First Year Course: GPHY102

Favourite Thing About the Teaches: They are pretty much the reason that you should be super pumped for Frosh Week 2010!  They are 39 of the most Amazing, Beautiful, Charismatic, Dandy, Excellent, Fantastic, Georgous, Happenin’, Incredible, Joyous, Keen, Lovely, Magnificent, Nifty, Outstanding, Perfect, Quite-grand, Radical, Sensational, Terrific, Ultra, Vivacious, Wonderful, X-ceptional, Young, Zealous people I’ve ever met!

Favourite Thing About Con-Ed: It is SO closely knit, and there is an unlimited amount of spirit!  Even though we are small, we are definitely mighty!  When you show up to the first day of class and you see one Con-Eddie, chances are there are at least five more sitting beside them and an empty seat with your name on it nearby as well.  It is so easy to meet Con-Eddies of all years and it’s pretty safe to say that everyone is just plain awesome!

Personal Spotlight: Why hello there, my name is Katie and I am your Academics Teach Exec, which means that I pretty much love everything to do with academics!  I also enjoy participating in too many Con-Ed intramural sports, learning about Biology and Math, watching Disney movies, cheering for the Toronto Maple Leafs, singing and dancing, loving Con-Ed, and keepin’ it KL^SSy!  I am super excited to meet you this September, so come on down and introduce yourself to me! :D

Words of Wisdom for Class of 2014: Get involved – there are actually zillions of clubs, intramurals, volunteer opportunities, CESA (Con-Ed student government) positions – you name it, Queen’s has got it!  It gives you a chance to meet new people AND do something you love (and even a break from school for a bit!).  Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, have fun, and be yourself!

Favourite First Year Course: CISC 121

Favourite Thing about the Teaches: They are 39 wonderful, dedicated, spirited, and welcoming people who are VERY excited to meet you. They are super excited for Frosh week!

Favourite Thing about Con-Ed: It is a community! It is so nice to be a part of a small faculty where you have the opportunity to get to really get to know each other.

Personal Spotlight: I am in IS and my teachables are computer science, math and geography! I lived in the Wally-T in first year (Waldron Tower) it was great! My family has a maple sugar bush (where you make maple syrup)! I love How I Met Your Mother and I have to admit I’m a bit of a Gleek! I love inner tube water polo (YOU should sign up for the Con-ed Intramural team! It’s a lot of fun!). I’m so excited to be your financial Teach exec and I’m also REALLY REALLY excited to meet you! Please come say hi during frosh week! When I grow up I want to be a teacher!

Words of Wisdom for the Class of 2014: Don’t worry, even if it seems impossible at first, Queen’s will soon start to feel like home! Teach Exec, your teaches and Dons/Landlords are here to help you, ask them questions. SIGN UP/APPLY/TRY OUT/AUDITION. Use your flex wisely! First year is a lot of fun, it’s okay to be nervous (most people are just as nervous as you are)! Remember, everyone was a Frosh once! Be who you are!
