The Academic Adventure

An important part of your transition to university is Academics. Although most students may initially feel overwhelmed about the increase workload in courses, there are always ways to prepare! Here are some reminders to help you with this process:

Read everything that you get in the mail or by email to your Queen’s account

  • Even though it may seem redundant, it is all useful!
  • Keep everything that you receive in a folder and bring it with you when you come to Queen’s – you never know when you may need to refer to it!

Creating your PIN

Your PIN is used for two important services: QCARD which you access through the My Queen’sU login, also known as the Queen’s Portal (a database for registering courses, checking marks, changing your address and much more) and WEBMAIL (student email that is incredibly important for keeping updated with course, hearing from Professors and other University Administration, and more)

  • Step 1: Find your student number (included in your letter of acceptance or other mail sent by the University)
  • Step 3: Enter your student number and birth date on the welcome screen
  • Step 4: Create a PIN that will be easy to remember and that follows the guidelines on the screen
  • Step 5: The next business day after you have selected your PIN go to www.queensu.ca/webstart and select “Get an email account”. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Register for Courses

Review the information on the following website links carefully to help you select both your Year 1 Arts and Science and Education courses.  We recommend that you book mark the following links so that you can refer to them easily before and after selecting your courses.

  • On the Arts and Science Website read the information provided for newly admitted students for Arts, Science, Computing or Music Degrees (for which ever Faculty/School you were accepted to) and Concurrent Education: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/newly-admitted-students
  • For all the information you need to know about selecting your Concurrent Education Courses, general information about the Queen’s Concurrent Education Program, where to find Education degree and final year Education entry requirements, Education timetables, Education course information and more, review the information for “Selecting Courses for Concurrent Education Students” at the following link: http://www.queensu.ca/artsci/undergraduate/newly-admitted-students/plan-your-courses

Here are links to important information on the Faculty of Education website. All of these links are located in the section “Selecting Courses for Concurrent Education Students” listed above.

  • Education Calendar:   Concurrent Education students must meet their degree requirements and final year Education entry requirements as outlined in the Education calendar for the year they start the program for the division levels they wish to pursue (Primary-Junior or Intermediate-Senior).  This information is outlined in the Programs of Study section in the Education Calendar. It is highly recommended that you take to the time to review these requirements in the Education Calendar before you attend Queen’s in the fall and to help you select Year 1 Arts and Science courses.  As you have enrolled in the Concurrent Education program in 2010-11, review the 2010-11 Faculty of Education Calendar at the following link: http://www.queensu.ca/calendars/education/index.html
  • Registration Steps for Concurrent Education Courses:
  • Queen’s Concurrent Education Years 1 to 4 Timetable
The timetable has information about the Education courses and sections available to you in your year of the Queen’s Concurrent Education program, course weights, instructors’ names, and where and when your course will be held: http://educ.queensu.ca/teachereducation/timetables.html
